What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a highly efficient martial art for men, women, and children. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu depends on physics, timing, technique and gamesmanship to overcome larger, stronger, and more aggressive adversaries.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practical martial art with a hierarchal system of movements, which includes throws, hold downs, and submissions. It can be practiced recreationally, or competitively, at all ages. Regular practice develops a high level of physical fitness, increased coordination, greater problem solving, ability to focus during stressful situations, and friendship.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a effective system of self-defense, so much so, it forms the basis for the U.S. Army’s Modern Combatives program and it is considered a foundational martial art for professional mixed martial artists. Also, many of the techniques are also well suited for women’s self-defense situations.
While speed and strength will always be factors in physical altercations, a well-trained Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioner, male or female, will be able to negate much of his/her opponent’s power through the use of proper technique, leverage, and timing.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Belts
At Ascend we follow the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF) belt system.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Promotion Cycles
At Ascend we follow a Trimestral System promotion cycle as defined by the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF).
“For the academies that adopt the degree graduation every three months, the IBJJF suggests three degrees for each belt. The fourth degree will be graduating the athlete to the next belt color according to the images below.” -IBJJF
Promotions will be held on the last Saturday of every quarter. Not every student will be eligible for promotion during each promotion cycle as progression for higher level belts usual takes longer than lower level belts.
